Well this is a question that is tough to answer without more information. Please list the size of screen, what Operating System you prefer running, and what you intend on using the computer for. This information is key in us helping you find your perfect notebook. |

Ok my friends. I told ya' i was computer illiterate so i will do my best . I am running on Windows Vista basic now. I like Vista ok, but many have talked abot Windows 7?. I will be using my lappy mostly for web surfing and my ramblings in poetry and short stories, so i will need mega memory. I do use flash drives and SD cards now. Would also like to be able to download vidoe files. I may be able to on this lappy, but have not figured it out yet. I now have a Dell Inspiron 1525. It is 1 year old. Ready for retirement by most standards. I will also want to transfer my programs (Microsoft Office 2007;etc..) to my new lappy. Not sure what i will need to do this. I hope i have given the proper info for you. Any help will be appreciated!p.s. I like my new nick!! thanx.

Hehehe Groovy... what size screen? That's probably the most important thing to know now since we know you don't want the laptop for gaming or video/photo editing which also requires very powerful hardware. Sounds like you need a basic to middle of the road laptop that won't be obsolete in a couple years. |

Sorry! i thought about that after i was already gone from here earlier! ( i am blond ya' know!!) Right now i have a 15.4" screen I think 17"-20" would be great. I may do some photo editing. I have a Lexmark Printer that has a program for that. Like you said, a good middle of the raod that will last a couple years will do fine. Thank you again for any help! |

Okay that is some interesting info. Short stories, writing, web surfing don't require much drive space at all. Any new computer you get will have enough storage. If you want to do photo editing with Photoshop and you use a lot of layers or work with a lot of pictures then ram and processing power is important to you. In short - go with computer that has Vista Home Premium or Windows 7 Home (Basic makes Vista look bad as an OS) Get a computer with 2GB or more ram, nowadays ram is cheap and you can either get one with 4GB or add later for cheap Processor - Go INtel and look for a T7400 or even better a P-series If you can get a computer with 64-bit that is even better, you want 4GB of ram for sure with x64 Transferring MS office you really can't, you could however use Magic Jelly Bean Finder and get the serial (has to be legit) and install using a MS Trial (I.E Pro with Pro Trial), or you can do what I do get Openoffice which works with Office - edit, create, save and is very powerful. Openoffice has it's own suite like Microsoft Office www.openoffice.org |

O btw the way if you are into Gaming and that get a Video card that is Nvidia 7800GO or higher. Stick with Intel and Nvidia and you will be happy. |

That was great advice especially on the ram and vid card. I don't know what to add to this? My laptop before the "Mac" was a 17 inch screen and I do still love it. Really a lot depends on how much you wish to spend. Macs are overpriced I think, but Last year I decided to get one and now know why they are expensive. They are built to last, and do work very well ( I run windows on it besides OSX Leopard, and it runs windows (even Vista) better than my PC laptop. At twice the price of most laptops with the same specs it is way too expensive, but really it is like getting two computers. |
