Bucky , I'd love to give you a Hug in a non gay way Yeah I remember back when Mercora was fun. I know there was lot's of times I'd stay up 3 or 4 days straight just having fun on Mercora. That's back when chat was busy and late at night it would get kind of crazy.

Sauce, I work for an ISP, The issue is not so much that people are using the traffic, It's that companies like sprint, who own the fiber are charging so much for a line, that its impossibe to make a profit without over selling bandwidth. The whole IPTV/RADIO/TORRENT aspect threatnes this model, Many ISP's the one i work for included are setting caps, and now facing legal charges because of it. There are currently several bills being passed through congress that is going to make it illegal to set any kind of cap, or throttle an internet connection. The only real way to fight is to get behind net neutrality, and regulation. And as much as i hate to say it.. Bandwidth does need to be regulated. Just like Water, and Electricity, and you're phone. That is the only way the two big companies, ATT and Sprint, are going to come back down to reality with bandwidth prices. The fact of the matter is Fiber is very efficient, and the capacity of the backbone has grown signfigantly, while the connections between the customer and the backbone have not. IF the telco's had spent the government money upgrading this infrastructure and preparing fiber to the home. That too would not be an issue, But they did not, They misappropriated the funds, and now are paying the consequences. Working on the inside, I know that the amount of traffic for p2p has not grown very much over the past few years. What is really threatening the ISP's is things such as HULU, and xbox lives marketplace, and the very large digital downloads that compete with their own entertainment offerings. |

Well sadly most ISP's here admit it's only 1-4% who are abusing the network. It's the classic case of a few rotten apple's ruin it for everyone. I'd rather see them kick abusive users and leave the other 90% plus alone. Oh the P2P broadcasting app I was talking about is http://www.peercast.org Edited by TheSauceMaster, Jun 19 2008, 08:03 PM.

This is really bizarre. I remember when the mercora / social.fm sites went down but they're back up again??? I was playing around and found a link to someone's profile, clicked on it and it loaded the profile so i decided to go to the main site and it worked as well. It's just a shame that if this service is dead there's no notice on the main site letting people know! |

Yeah, in our case its about 4 percent who eat up most of the bandwidth, There is a 125 gig cap, then the customers will be throttled to half a meg of service. I disagree with that policy, but what can i do. as an avid bittorrent user, i disagree with that decesion, I dont think it should be up to any suites to regulate what type of traffic you pass, or how much you pass, if you buy a 10 meg line you should get to use the full 10 megs.. 24/7 But also being a realist, I would much rather have torrent traffic shaped during peak usage times. than throttled/blocked/capped. The packet shaping technology is very advanced. We can actually set it to give total bittorrent usage 50% of the total usage, thus making sure that it never becomes a problem, and that everyone recieves the same chunk of the pie, and if usage is low for the day, your torrents are faster. I dont like that solution any more than the other, but if its something that must be done, I would much rather see that |

I'm not a heavy user and I think the most I've ever used is 100gig in a month. I just looked at my DU Meter and Since 6/1/08 to 6/20/08 I've used 6.9 GB incoming , and 2.6GB outgoing. I think last month I probably did about 45GB and my average is about 30GB a month. |

That or the fucking RIAA was behind the failure....my money (this time) is NOT on the RIAA,it's on the fact that Mercora used to be cool, but when it became SocialFM it started to suck. |
